JarekHe had been awake for most of the night, though he didn't toss or turn. The bed was small and he didn't want to wake Isabel, because then he would have to explain why he couldn't fall asleep. He wasn't sure of the why yet, if it was just the fact that for the first time he had spoken about his suspicions, or if it had to do a little more with the fact that he had seen Evanee.
Now it was dark, his thoughts seemed to roam a little more free in a way only nights could make them, and he wasn't sure anymore if he still felt angry with her.
One thing he
did know, was that the numbness that had been in his chest for way too long - he barely even recognised it was there most of the time - was slowly retreating. It left a confusing mix of emotions for him to untangle, and when the first light sneaked around the curtains, he was glad to have an excuse to get out of bed. Isabel turned, but didn't wake, and he slipped into a pair of fresh clothes before he left the room in silence. His training and sneaking around had made him very good at being silent.
The day had only just started, and because it was still weekend, the halls were mostly empty. Jarek let out a huff of breath and ran a hand through his hair. As he walked towards the bathroom at the end of the hallway, he tried to shake off the restless thoughts that had been in his mind for most of the night.
There was a small collection of people already in the breakfast room, but Jarek didn't feel like talking yet, so he ignored them and walked straight towards the food table instead. Just as he was grabbing a piece of bread to put on his plate, he felt a hand on his arm. He frowned, but his eyebrows quickly went up again as he turned around and recognised Charlie.
"Jarek," she said, sounding hesitant. He put down his plate.
"Charlie?" he replied, feeling just as unsure. They hadn't spoken in- well, months probably.
"I just- I heard one of the teachers on the way here. They said- Monique had died. I just..thought you'd want to know," she said, casting her eyes down during the last of her words. Jarek stared at her, feeling confused for a moment.
"What? But I-," he started, then frowned. Evanee had spoken about her not more than one day ago.
"Did you- How-,"
"They said it looked like a strigoi," Charlie said, and Jarek suddenly felt sick. "She wasn't on school territory when they found her."
Charlie looked up again and seemed to see something in his face, because she gently pulled the plate out of Jarek's hands and put it back on the table. "I'm sorry," she said in a hoarse voice. Now Jarek really looked at her, she seemed a little pale. He didn't think she and Monique had ever gotten along, but they hadn't spoken for a long time, and things constantly changed.
"Me too," he muttered, his thoughts suddenly settling on Evanee.
Oh god.
"I- I need to go," he said in a rush, earning him a surprised look from Charlie. "I'll talk to you later?" He asked carefully. Charlie responded with a small smile. "Okay," she said, and with a relieved sigh Jarek left the room, grabbing a banana on last thought. He didn't think she would be seriously hurt, Charlie would've heard the teachers talking about her otherwise, but she had lost her best friend.
He had tried not to run, but his legs felt a little sore from the speed-walking nevertheless when he arrived at the spot Evanee had told him to meet her.
